Philippines – Transforming education: Laptops for Aid Project

The United Nations has emphasized that education is key for progress towards achieving all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Statistics show that individuals who complete college have a 98% chance of overcoming poverty. However, in the Philippines, only 14 out of every 100 children who enter grade 1 will finish college.

The Mustard Seed Foundation aims to address this challenge. In the Philippines, the Foundation has selected Caritas Manila as a recipient of its Laptops for Aid Project. Caritas Manila supports over 4,600 scholars nationwide through its priority program, the Youth Servant Leadership and Education Program (YSLEP). These scholars come from the poorest communities, including youth from indigenous peoples (IPs). Approximately 2,000 of these scholars live in the slums of Metro Manila, the capital of the Philippines.

The primary focus of YSLEP is education, with an emphasis on developing servant leaders. All scholars in this program are at the collegiate level and are required to complete the four-year program.

By providing access to technology, the Foundation aims to enhance educational opportunities, bridge the digital divide, and empower young individuals with the skills needed for sustainable development.
